Chancellor's invitation to Homecoming 2010

In recent years, Liberty University has experienced tremendous growth in the student body and facilities. The campus probably looks much different than the last time you visited. As fellow alumni, my wife Becki and I invite you to return for Homecoming weekend on Oct. 8-9 to share memories and explore your alma mater.

We have many exciting events planned for your return to Liberty Mountain that will allow you to re-connect with old friends and reminisce about your college days. Visit www.lualumni.com for all the details.

We hope to see you soon!

Coach Danny Rocco

Position: Head football coach
Joined Liberty: December 2005
Spouse: Julie
Children: David, 19, and Amy, 17
Education: Wake Forest University, 1984

Why did you choose to coach at Liberty University?
To come to Liberty University and be the head football coach was just an unbelievable opportunity for me and my family. I had been preparing myself for a head coaching position for a number of years and it came at the perfect stage of my life. When I had a chance to sit down and talk with Dr. Falwell, it removed any doubt in my mind to the commitment the university was going to make to football. All the different factors we were looking for were here at Liberty — the opportunity to win, to build a program, being at a faith-based university and being in an environment that is going to allow me and my family to grow spiritually. We really feel that we have been blessed to be a part of the Liberty University family.

What do you enjoy doing during your free time?
I enjoy traveling with my family, whether it is just me and my wife or also with our two children. We don't necessarily travel the world, but my wife and I enjoy taking shorter weekend trips to see unique parts of the country. I don't have a lot of hobbies away from football, but travel is something that has always interested me. Our jobs are so consuming. We try to enjoy the little time that I do have to get away from the hustle of the job and try to spend it with my family.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I'm not nearly as intense and focused as I appear to be [while coaching] when I'm away from the office. I carry the responsibilities of the job with me when I'm in a position of representing the university and this football program, but when I’m away with my family, whether it is at home or when we travel, I certainly don’t have the same temperament or personality as when I'm "on the job." There is another side of me that most people don't see. I'm much more than just the head football coach, as I'm a father and a husband, which are elements that people don't always know about me.

Fast fact

Sparky was designated as Liberty’s mascot in 1980. As an eagle, Sparky symbolized Liberty’s patriotic foundation.

Originally, Sparky clutched a flaming torch, which represented the university’s early motto “Knowledge Aflame.”

Insure your college-bound child: Insuring against college calamities

If you’re the parent of dependent college students living away from home, you may not be aware that your homeowners policy may cover their personal property and personal liability. You should review your policy regarding property damage, medical payments and lawsuits.

Personal property coverage

To get the most from your coverage:

  • Take an inventory of your child’s personal property.
  • Keep the receipts of valuable items.
  • Make a video of the dorm room or apartment after you’ve set it up.
Personal Liability Coverage

Personal liability coverage usually protects your child against claims of unintentional bodily and property damage up to $100,000 per incident. Standard coverage may include medical bills for injured parties up to three years from the time of the incident, property damage up to $500 per occurrence and legal defense against claims brought on by injured parties.
