Flames head to NCAA tournament in Louisville

Thanks to another Big South Championship title, the Lady Flames are headed to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. Liberty earned the No. 13 seed and will face off against No. 4 seed University of Kentucky in the first round of tournament play on Saturday, March 20 in Louisville, Ky.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our team to face a high-caliber program from a great conference,” said Liberty head coach Carey Green.  “I have to be pleased with a No. 13 seed. We’ve had some success in that spot before.”

This is the Flames 13th trip to the NCAA tournament in the last 14 years. They enter the tournament with a 25-5 record and a 10-game winning streak. The Kentucky Wildcats are 25-7 so far this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall, home of the University of Louisville Cardinals basketball teams.

“I look forward to seeing a lot of Liberty fans at the game,” said Green. “And we are expecting lots of prayers.”

Refuting modern spirituality
Author and alumnus returns to LU

Author Dave Sterrett (’03) earned his B.S. in Biblical Studies through Liberty University, an M.A. in Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Philosophy at the University of Dallas. A former Flames basketball player, Sterrett has kept a busy schedule since his days at LU, writing books and traveling to various speaking engagements addressing topics in apologetics. In his first book, “‘O’ God, A Dialogue on Truth and Oprah’s Spirituality,” which he co-authored with prominent Christian author Josh McDowell, Sterrett analyzed and refuted the claims of modern spirituality that he and McDowell termed “Oprah’s spirituality.” Sterrett’s latest title, “Why Trust Jesus?,” examines difficult questions of the very character and nature of God.

In early March, Sterrett returned to LU to serve as a guest lecturer for several Women’s Ministry courses and to challenge students to stand up for truth. Sterrett explained current trends in modern spirituality and how to refute those trends with the truth from God’s word.

In a culture of spiritual unrest, Sterrett recognizes that new ideas of religion can be confusing and attractive at first, however, he instructed students to pursue truth and to engage current culture looking for opportunities to share truth. “If something doesn’t make sense, take the time to investigate and intellectually examine the issue,” he said. “God has called you to take part in the Great Commission.”

Sterrett returned to LU as an act of giving back to his alma mater and sharing his desire for Biblical truth with current students. “I am very excited about what is happening here at Liberty and what has continued to take place since I left,” he said. “It’s very exciting to see how this university is growing, however, they are staying true to the sound biblical doctrine and Christian worldview.” Sterrett plans to write five additional books in the next year, including “The Coffee House Chronicles” with Josh McDowell, slated for release in January 2011.

Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project

When Liberty Mutual launched a new television commercial in 2006, no one could have predicted the outcome. The spot, which showed one good deed triggering a chain of good deeds, “seemed to strike a chord,” according to Ted Kelly, Liberty Mutual chairman, president and CEO. “We had a remarkable response — thousands of emails from churches, schools and social groups.”

The result? Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project -- a dynamic online community that encourages people to think, talk and debate about what responsibility means to them. Go to www.responsibilityproject.com, check out the short films, share your stories, and join in on the conversation!
