More than 8,000 receive degrees |
|
|
Liberty University honored its largest-ever graduating class — 8,650 students — at 2010 Commencement on Saturday, May 15. After a week filled with rain, thunderstorms and high humidity, sunny skies greeted the graduates as an estimated 28,000 filled Arthur L. Williams Stadium, many of them in temporary seating due to ongoing construction.
“Today marks the end of another wonderful year of great blessings here at Liberty University,” said Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.
Glenn Beck, one of America’s leading radio and TV personalities on FOX News, served as the keynote speaker for Commencement.
Beck told the graduates that they must have faith and courage to overcome challenges that face the world today, such as high unemployment and the weak dollar.
“Turn to God and live,” he said. “Life is only what you make of it. Nothing more, nothing less. … God is the truth. The truth will consume everything that is not true. … The world is full of lies.”
About 4,400 students walked in the ceremony, a significant jump from last year when 2,300 graduates were present.
Of this year’s graduates, 24 percent were residential students, and 76 percent received their degrees from Liberty University Online. They received degrees and certifications from the following areas: aeronautics (22), arts and sciences (2,192), business (1,273), communication (279), engineering and computational science (81), education (1,050), government (287), law (57), religion (886), seminary (1,479), Willmington School of the Bible (20), Liberty Home Bible Institute (58), Institute of Biblical Studies (20) and Liberty University Online Academy (53).
Falwell noted that many of his father’s visions, those of LU’s founder, the late Dr. Jerry Falwell, have been met this year, including having 50,000 students enrolled on campus and through Liberty University Online. He also spoke about new facilities that have been built in recent years and how Liberty’s endowment continues to grow.
“The vision for Liberty was not to create just another Bible school, but instead to build for conservative evangelical Christians what Notre Dame is for Catholic young people or what Brigham Young is for Mormon youth,” Falwell said. “We are thankful to God that the dream is now being realized.”

Alumni Chapter hosts LU Co-Founder |
|
|
Liberty co-founder and dean of the School of Religion Dr. Elmer Towns visited with members of the Detroit Alumni Chapter in late April. Chapter members hosted a dinner, free to all alumni and their families, in honor of Towns’ visit.
“I talked to the alumni members who were there,” said Towns. “We had a wonderful meeting.”
The following day, Towns led a seminar titled, "The Next Three Methods to Revitalize the Sunday School" at Hope Community Baptist Church in Detroit. |

245 Spring Event |
|
|
More than 100 alumni participated in the 245 Alumni Chapter Spring Event in April, which featured a cookout, Flames football spring game, Flames baseball vs. Virginia Military Institute, and the 5k Race for Life that benefitted the Liberty Godparent Foundation.
Liberty University alumnus Nick Kessler sponsored the cookout on campus. Alumni and their families enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and reconnecting with old friends.
Kessler attended Liberty University from 1991-94, majoring in accounting with a minor in finance. After his time at Liberty, Kessler sought opportunities to serve others, which led him to become involved with Woodmen of the World Insurance; he is now an area manager. Woodmen of the World is the largest fraternal benefit society with open membership in the United States.
Kessler wants to use his desire to serve by connecting with current LU students and alumni.
“It’s been great coming back and building relationships,” he said.

Twelve Tips for Childproofing Your Home |
Tips from Liberty Mutual |
|
Each year, children are unintentionally hurt — and sometimes killed — by hazards in and around the home. The good news is that these 12 tips for childproofing can help reduce and prevent the risk of injury.
- Install safety latches on all cabinets and drawers to prevent access to toxins and sharp appliances.
- Secure bookcases and bureaus to the wall with brackets to prevent them from tipping over.
- Put safety caps on unused electrical outlets, and ground outlets in the bathroom and kitchen with fault circuit interrupters.
- Unplug electrical appliances near sinks after use to prevent accidental electrocution from contact with water.
- Use the stove’s back burners to keep hot pots and pans out of reach.
- Install anti-scalding devices on faucets and showerheads to prevent burns.
- Place bumpers on the corners and sharp edges of furniture.
- Install toilet locks to keep the lids closed. Children can drown in just one inch of water.
- Put up safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent toddlers from climbing and falling.
- Make sure window blinds do not have looped cords, which can be strangulation hazards.
- Lock up power tools and flammable substances in a shed or basement.
- Store and lock up firearms and ammunition separately, well out of reach.
