Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony
The spring was full of exciting military events — especially the third annual Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony, which took place on Friday, May 9. All graduating service members and veterans were invited to the special ceremony and presented with a Liberty University Challenge Coin. Dr. Ben Gutierrez, administrative dean for undergraduate programs, led the ceremony and Retired Maj. Gen. Robert F. Dees, U.S. Army, delivered the keynote address.
General Dees retired with numerous honors and awards in 2003, and he now serves as Liberty’s associate vice president of military outreach. The entire Liberty family is proud of the 2014 military graduates and their commitment to serving our nation!
D-Day Anniversary Event: A Memorial Testament of Freedom
On June 6, Liberty was a supporting sponsor for “Memorial Testament of Freedom,” a D-Day event at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va. University staff members helped with portions of the ceremony, including coordinating flyovers by WWII aircraft, sponsoring some of the aircraft, and speaking at the event. Staff members also assisted with the baton passing, which included The Golden Knights, a U.S. Army parachute team.

GoArmyEd Course Planner
On March 29, GoArmyEd released a course planner for Army students receiving Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) through the GoArmyEd portal. This valuable tool allows students to list all of the courses required to complete their selected degree plan in one place. This list is then submitted to Liberty for approval so that every student knows how their courses contribute toward the completion of their degree. The planner helps students monitor their progress and stay on track while reaching their educational goals.
The use of this planner is required for every student by the completion of their sixth credit hour (see degree plan exceptions). For more information about this tool, check out the Office of Military Affairs Course Planner guide.
Summer B and D Sub-Terms Overlap
Online courses that run through the summer begin on a different schedule than those in the fall and spring. During the summer, courses that are scheduled during the B and D sub-terms will overlap for 10 days (June 23-July 4), which may cause increased workload for students.
What does this mean for you?
- Plan Ahead: The Office of Military Affairs recommends that students plan for this increase in workload. We want to see you succeed!
- U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) GI Bill Benefits: Students using VA benefits that are enrolled for both B and D sub-terms should consider how this overlap will affect their VA training time.
- For example, if a student is enrolled in 3 hours in the B sub-term and 3 hours in the D sub-term (and no other courses), he/she will be considered to be enrolled in 6 hours (full-time) during the period of course overlap only. He/she will be considered to be enrolled in 3 hours when the courses are not overlapping.
- The VA will pay students at the full-time rate for these 10 days, which may result in increased stipend/housing allowance amounts.
See our VA Training Time guide for more details.

Military Chaplain: First Lieutenant Isaac Van Epps
Among our military graduates is 1st Lt. Isaac Van Epps, a chaplain candidate with the U.S. Army Reserves. Epps is a dedicated husband and father and is currently earning his Master of Divinity in Chaplaincy. When asked what he would like to say to fellow graduates, he responded:
“Walk daily in the power and the strength of our Lord, and remember the words of Christ: ‘Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.’The Office of Military Affairs congratulates him and all of our military graduates for their outstanding achievements and service to our country.
– John 15:4.”
